How it goes
Inspect and prep
Loose paint is scraped, bare wood is sanded and primed, and gaps are caulked.
Choose the right product
Exterior acrylic for wood and stucco, oil or alkyd enamel for doors and railings that take abuse.
Two coats in the right window
Painting is scheduled to avoid fog moisture in the morning and direct heat in the afternoon.
Reassemble and inspect
Hardware goes back on, doors are re-hung, and the finish is checked once dry.
Outdoor Painting in Bay Area homes
The corridor has two very different exterior climates. From San Francisco through Redwood City, fog leaves surfaces damp until late morning, so painting starts once the wood is dry and stops before the evening marine layer returns. Sunnyvale, Santa Clara, and San Jose run hot and dry in summer, so work moves to shaded sides and mornings to prevent paint drying too fast.
Wood fences and redwood trim are everywhere on the Peninsula, and unsealed redwood weathers gray fast. A solid-color stain or exterior acrylic over primer holds up better than a thin coat of paint.

Outdoor Painting: questions people ask
How much does it cost to paint a front door?
Two to three hours at the hourly rate for both sides and two coats, so $150–225 in labor plus paint.
Do you paint whole houses?
No. Full exterior repaints are referred to a painting contractor. Doors, trim, fences, railings, and small sections are all covered.
When is the best time to paint outside in the Bay Area?
Late spring through early fall, working after the morning fog burns off. Near the coast that means late-morning starts; inland it means starting early to beat the heat.
Do you paint fences?
Yes, wood fences and gates are prepped, primed where bare, and painted or stained.
What paint lasts longest outside?
Exterior acrylic latex for most surfaces; alkyd or oil enamel for doors and railings that get handled daily.
