How it goes
Assess the damage
Check whether the wall is drywall, lath-and-plaster, or skim-coated, since each needs a different patch.
Prep and patch
Cut a clean opening if needed, add backing, set the patch, tape the seams, and apply compound.
Float and texture
Feather the compound out wide, sand smooth, and match the existing texture so the patch doesn't telegraph.
Prime and paint
Prime the patch and paint with your existing color, or leave it primed and ready if you're repainting.
Wall Repair in Bay Area homes
A lot of Peninsula housing was built before drywall was standard. Edwardian and Victorian flats in San Francisco, and many 1920s homes in Burlingame and San Mateo, still have lath-and-plaster walls. Plaster cracks differently than drywall and needs a setting-type compound and a bonding agent, not a quick spackle pass.
Ground movement is the other local factor. Hairline cracks that reappear above doors and at window corners in older homes are usually seasonal settling, not a structural problem. They're repaired with flexible tape and compound so they stay closed longer.

Wall Repair: questions people ask
How much does drywall repair cost?
Billed by the hour, quoted before work starts. A typical single patch runs one to two hours, so one to two hours of labor plus a few dollars in compound and texture.
Can the patch be painted the same day?
Small patches can be primed and painted in the same visit. Larger patches need a drying day between coats, so painting usually happens on a short second visit.
Do you match wall texture?
Yes. Orange peel, knockdown, and skip trowel are matched with spray texture or hand tools. Smooth walls are skim-coated and sanded.
Can you repair plaster walls?
Yes. Plaster is common in San Francisco, Burlingame, and San Mateo homes, and it's repaired with the right setting compound rather than drywall spackle.
What if I don't have the paint color?
A close match is possible from a sample chip. If an exact match matters, the original brand and color code from the paint can is the fastest route.
